from University of Waterloo
The headline reads, “Women are naturally more fit than men.” I would expect many men to take issue with that, and University of Waterloo researchers admit their findings are contrary to the popular assumption that men are naturally more athletic. They explain their finding this way: Women can process oxygen more quickly than men when they start to exercise and that quick oxygen uptake places less strain on cells in the body. It is also an important measure of aerobic fitness. The study compared oxygen uptake and oxygen use by muscles between a group of young men and young women. It is not clear why, but women consistently outperformed men in a treadmill exercise with about thirty percent faster oxygen handling throughout the body.
