HARMFUL BLOOD FAT

from Nature Immunology

Medicine has long considered that cholesterol levels in the blood can trigger inflammation in the body. But other types of fats in the blood can also be harmful. An international team of researchers has been studying the blood fats known as triglycerides. When higher levels of triglycerides are present, they can cause inflammation, and if it becomes chronic, can damage kidneys or cause narrowing of the arteries--known as atherosclerosis-- a main cause of heart attacks. Patients with high levels of triglycerides had a higher death rate than those with a similar health history. Put another way, the researchers say adopting a low-fat diet may significantly extend life expectancy in high-risk patients. The report is in Nature Immunology
