The concept of social isolation may be medically necessary during these times, even if unpopular. Aside from the political unpopularity, social isolation results in higher risk of hospitalization for respiratory conditions in older adults. The study of more than four thousand hospital and death records in Britain was published in the journal Thorax. It confirms the notion that living alone and poor social contact is not healthy for older adults. However, that heightened risk for hospitalization comes at the same time that social isolation or social distancing is being recommended to protect vulnerable people from the coronavirus. Social support by phone, text or email may help counter the isolation and loneliness they feel.
