Some people may be tiring of reminders to wear face masks, but the statistics in support of masks keep coming in. The latest is from the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The essence of a letter from researchers at the University of Hong Kong is that countries who adopted face masks early showed mild or moderate infection rates of the coronavirus. Despite Hong Kong’s proximity to mainland China, its infection rate is generally modest –only slightly more than one thousand cases since the pandemic began. A survey shows nearly ninety-nine percent of Hong Kong residents use face masks. Their message is clear: Face masks can help slow the spread of Covid-19.
