E-CIGARETTES

from journal Thorax

Use of e-cigarettes is increasing in popularity despite lingering questions about their benefits and safety. A new study in the journal Thorax found vapor from e-cigarettes interferes with the process of removing particles, bacteria and allergens of the respiratory tract. Researchers devised a way to mimic the condensate produced from vaping. They exposed lung tissue samples from a group of healthy non-smokers to the condensate. The result was increased cell death in the samples and significantly more inflammatory chemicals—even more if the condensate contained nicotine. The study concludes the long-term effect of ecigarettes may be more harmful than previously thought—and may be similar to those seen in regular smokers.
