OTC MEDS COMPLICATE LAB TESTS

from Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine

Over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements may interact with prescription medications. That is one reason your healthcare professional needs to know the full list of medications and supplements. Another reason is that most people are not aware of the potential effects over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements and vitamins have on laboratory test results. Data collected from eighteen countries and published in the journal Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine shows even seemingly innocuous products such as multivitamins, cranberry supplements and aspirin consumed shortly before giving a blood sample may cause changes in laboratory test results. That may lead to possibly incorrect diagnosis of health issues.
