AVOID THAT WAKE-UP CUP

from British Journal of Nutrition

A cup of coffee first thing in the morning is a ritual for a lot of people. That may help you wake up, but it could also be harmful. Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition suggests coffee before breakfast could impair blood sugar levels. Authors asked a group of healthy men and women to try three experiments. In one, after a normal night’s sleep, they were asked to consume a sugary drink first thing in the morning—about the same nutritional level as a typical breakfast. On another occasion, after a disrupted night’s sleep, they were given the same sugary drink. On a third instance, they were first given a strong black coffee a half-hour before the sugary drink. Coffee beforehand hiked the blood sugar response to breakfast by fifty percent!
