NEW WORRIES ABOUT SECONDHAND SMOKE

from Archives of General Psychiatry

A lot of health risks are attributed to secondhand smoke, but until now, most of them related to physical health. Recently, however, a team of researchers at University College in London reported in Archives of General Psychiatry that secondhand smoke is associated with psychological distress and risk of future psychiatric illness. Sampling more than eight thousand people without a history of mental illness, high secondhand smoke exposure raised the risk of psychological distress or negative mood by fifty percent. Active smokers were also likely to report psychological distress. The researchers say the findings emphasize the importance of reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, not only for the benefit of physical health, but for our mental health as well.
