NEW CANCER EXERCISE GUIDELINES

presented to the American Society of Clinical Oncology

Cancer patients have traditionally been told to rest and avoid exercise, but new national guidelines suggest finding ways for cancer patients to be physically active during and after treatment. The guidelines, presented to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, are aimed at making cancer exercise rehabilitation programs as common as those offered to people who have had heart attacks or heart surgery. The guidelines were formulated after analyzing studies related to five different adult cancers. Cancer patients should consult their doctor about appropriate exercises, based on their type of cancer, fitness level and other factors that might influence their safety. But, otherwise, the guidelines recommend getting the same one hundred fifty minutes per week of moderate intensity aerobic exercise as is recommended for the general public.
