Children younger than two are not supposed to have added sugar in the foods they consume. The American Heart Association says added sugars are full of energy, but lack nutritional value. Previous research at the University of Kansas focused on infant formulas. A study update shows most infant formulas sold in this country contain added sugars rather than the healthier, naturally occurring lactose found a cow-milk base that would be best for babies because it is closest to human breast milk. The KU researchers say parents have no way of knowing the nutritional information without such scientific analysis because of lax regulation and labeling requirements. Details of the latest research are published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis.
