Growing scientific evidence links sodium or salt intake with risk of obesity. Researchers in Finland found sodium intake was higher than recommended across nearly all groups of adults they observed. Women with highest levels of sodium consumption were more than four times as likely to have general obesity and three times as likely to have abdominal obesity--even higher in all groups of men in the study. Men in the highest group consumed more than twelve grams of daily salt—women nine grams—double what is recommended by the World Health Organization. Most sodium is from processed foods, including meat and dairy products, especially cheese. The study was presented to the European Association for the Study of Obesity.
