Diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, disability, vision loss and premature death. New research finds physical inactivity is a major and preventable driver of the harm from diabetes—not an inevitable toll of the disease. Researchers wrote in the Journal of Sport and Health Science that about ten percent of complications from diabetes may be prevented by increases in physical activity. At least one hundred fifty minutes per week is considered the baseline for physical activity. Authors say treating complications of diabetes consumes a growing share of health budgets. They add integrating physical activity into routine diabetes care is no longer optional.
