SEEING IN AS WELL AS SEEING OUT

By February 26, 2026No Comments

Our eyes are used to see out, but new research shows they also allow seeing in. Houston Methodist researchers say our eyes are indeed a window to the brain, but previous research may have been looking in the wrong part of the window or in this case retina. Authors writing in the Journal of Alzheimer’ Disease, say the most critical early indications of Alzheimer’s may not be in the center of the retina, but hidden in the outer edges. Although these findings are from testing on laboratory animals, researchers say that by identifying these retinal changes, doctors may eventually be able to use routine non-invasive eye exams to catch and treat Alzheimer’s disease years before memory loss begins.
