Ever feel that you are having trouble coping with a stressful situation? Your ability to adapt to stress may be more than mental. Researchers at Binghamton University linked what they call psychological flexibility to consistent healthy habits, such as regular exercise, eating a healthy breakfast and a good night’s sleep. The study, appearing in the Journal of American College Health, found eating breakfast five or more times a week is associated with psychological flexibility, while people who sleep less than six hours tend to have less resilience. Exercising even twenty minutes a day is associated with better psychological flexibility and resilience. Authors caution that diet and lifestyle don’t make a person psychologically resilient by themselves, but they help.
