There is much about autism that we don’t understand, but there is also a lot of misinformation. Autism is a life-long disability marked by perceived communication difficulties. However, a new study from the UK in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, argues that autistic people communicate just as effectively as others, often communicating more directly, but struggle to read social cues and body language of non-autistc counterparts. Authors say they hope the results of the study will help reduce the stigma surrounding autism. They say the new evidence is autism should not be associated with social impairment. Rather it should lead to increased understanding of communication styles as a difference not a deficiency.
