Studies have shown physical activity lowers risk of cancer, but new statistics from the National Cancer Institute are the first to evaluate cancer risk associated with light-intensity activities such as doing errands and performing household chores. The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, replaced daily sedentary time with light to various levels of physical activity to see the reduced risk of cancer. To quantify, the researchers showed the number of steps per day, but not the pace of the steps, lowered cancer risk—eleven percent lower with seven thousand steps compared to five thousand steps and sixteen percent lower for those getting in nine thousand daily steps. The study is further incentive to get up off the couch.
