TESTING OLDER DRIVERS

Nearly fifty million drivers in this country are older than sixty five and eight million people in that age group experience mild cognitive impairment that could lead to car crashes. Using those statistics, researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital reviewed methods of evaluating driving safety. They note cognition, visual and motor skills decline as we age, affecting driving safety The article in JAMA Neurology says comprehensive driving assessments may cost between five hundred and eight hundred dollars, a prohibitive amount for many people. It suggests that Medicare cover evaluations of driver’s safety—that the cost of not identifying potentially dangerous drivers can be much more than the cost of covering a safety evaluation.
