Crossword puzzles and other similar mind games are often suggested to slow the brain’s natural aging process. These, including reading, have been shown to slow cognitive decline in the elderly. A new study from Texas A & M School of Public Health offers an encouraging postscript to this knowledge. Researchers found that even elderly patients who already show mild cognitive impairment can slow further cognitive decline. Their study, in the Journal of Cognitive Enhancement, analyzed six thousand patients already diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. Those with the highest participation in stimulating activities, such as reading, game playing or hobbies showed higher cognitive functioning during the eight-year study
