ALCOHOL AND THE PANDEMIC

By May 24, 2024No Comments

The perception that alcohol consumption increased during the pandemic is confirmed by more than one study, but a new study identified one group whose drinking declined during and after the pandemic. Carnegie Melon University researchers found young adults, in their twenties, who had been heavy drinkers before the pandemic drank less and alcohol-related problems declined. That group reduced how much and how often they were drinking. While alcohol was certainly available during the pandemic, researchers note the environment changed drastically. Because of pandemic restrictions, they were not able to drink with friends at parties. Solitary drinking in this sample group increased slightly, but apparently drinking alone isn’t as much fun.
