The issue of climate change is becoming more obvious as extreme weather events become more common. You may have heard of some of the anticipated changes, but among the latest is spread of infectious diseases. An article in JAMA by experts at the University of California Davis raises alarm about changes in disease behavior—some of that already beginning to show. For instance, the mosquito that transmits malaria is expanding northward. So are cases of malaria. Experts have also noticed changes in animal migration patterns along with closer contact with humans, raising worry about greater transmission of diseases , such as plague and hantavirus. While the article calls for medical professionals to be more aware, it also gives the public reason to become more aware.
