Cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in this country, even as cigarette smoking has dropped to an all-time low. A report from Penn State College of Medicine suggests electronic cigarettes may help people quit smoking tobacco cigarettes. It found switching to nicotine e-cigarettes were three times more likely to quit smoking within six weeks compared to those who used an identical looking e-cigarette without nicotine. They also had lower levels of several toxic chemicals present in tobacco. Authors wrote in JAMA Network Open that nicotine, while addictive, is not the primary cause of smoking-related cancers The study offers another option for people who haven’t been able to quit smoking via other means.
