AVOIDING FIRST STROKE

Each year in this country over one-half million people have a first stroke, but up to eighty percent of the strokes may be preventable. How is explained in new guidelines from the American Stroke Association. They suggest routine health screening for risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and obesity. There’s more. Good nutrition, smoking cessation and being physically active can help prevent a first stroke. Authors say the new guidelines are important because new discoveries have been made in the ten years since the last update. Among those are understanding which people are at increased risk of a first stroke, along with programs to preserve heart and brain health.
