New statistics from the American Cancer Society are encouraging—the number of Americans living with a history of cancer has grown to more than eighteen million. The findings show the benefit of early detection and improved treatment are making a real difference. However, looking behind the improved survival numbers, the American Cancer Society, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute notes that surviving cancer can be a complex and long-term ordeal. Many survivors cope with critical issues, such as long-term effects of treatment, financial hardship and fear of recurrence. Authors say it is vital we recognize and respond to these needs in an equitable manner--calling for expanded high-quality cancer care.
