With the growing legalization of cannabis in this country, there may be a perception that cannabis is safe during pregnancy. Not according to a study from Oregon Health & Science Unversity that found combined cannabis and nicotine use during pregnancy is associated with significantly greater risk of poor health outcomes for newborns—compared with use of either substance alone. Researchers say the risk includes being small at birth, premature delivery or even death. That one—infant death—was calculated at four times the risk compared to pregnant women who used neither of the substances. The study in JAMA Nework Open suggests avoiding use of just one of the substances can decrease pregnancy risks compared to using both.
