Colon cancer is on the rise in young adults and a new study reveals diet as a main risk factor. The American Cancer Society says colon cancer is now the leading cause of death in men under the age of fifty and second in women. Cleveland Clinic researchers reported to the journal NPJ Precision Oncology. It is impractical to give colonoscopies to such a broad range of ages, but much more feasible is give all patients in their system a simple test to measure a biomarker that determines colon cancer risk, then further test the most at-risk individuals. Authors were excited to learn diet plays such a large role in cancer risk, because that makes it easier to identify at-risk individuals—and simpler to change their diet to prevent colon cancer.
