COST OF MISINFORMATION

The amount of misinformation with which we are bombarded has a direct effect in creating news fatigue or drives some away from news because it is too hard to know what is information and what is misinformation. Those are findings of a study from the University of Michigan and published in Journalism Studies. Authors say when we don’t trust our institutions, we don’t have the mental shortcuts to determine which outlets are sharing information we can trust. That also applies to nonpartisan outlets. The study viewed surveys from before and after the 2020 election and follows the notion that the more information is available, such as leading up to election, the more people just avoid the news. Not something journalists want to hear as we head into another election cycle.
