We—meaning the world’s population—are getting older along with an increase in symptoms of depression among older adults, such as lack of pleasure, loss of appetite, insomnia and increased fatigue. Researchers at the National University of Singapore say their work focuses on diet to prevent late-life depression. The study tracked more than thirteen thousand participants for some twenty years, showing higher amounts of fruits between forty and sixty-five associated with lower risk of symptoms of depression after sixty-five. Authors of the article in the Journal of Nutrition Health and Aging say those with three or more servings of fruit each day during mid-life reduced symptoms of depression by more than twenty percent as they got older.
