We live in a world of various kinds of diets and diet products. The sheer number suggests a lot of us are interested in controlling our weight. Unfortunately, many if not most of us have found sticking to a fad diet is difficult. Joyce Patterson, a registered dietician at Michigan Medicine, has written a book, called Think Like a Dietician, that reviews diet trends, unpacks the myths and explains the barriers to fad diet success. She says many popular diets are based on very little long-term scientific evidence and some diets even recommend overly restrictive eating. Patterson notes that when we have a goal, many of us can lose weight. Her message is to follow dietary recommendations most of the time, but allow yourself a little flexibility for occasional guilty pleasures.
