Online gambling has become legal in many states as well as in Canada. New statistics from Canada underline the health issues involved in excessive gambling. The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, notes that most people experiencing a gambling problem will never seek care. Yet, this study shows visits to emergency rooms for gambling disorders have nearly doubled in Ontario in the fourteen years since Canada expanded online and sports gambling. The study found more than seventy percent of emergency department visits for gambling disorder involved another mental health condition or heavy substance abuse. Authors also note consequences of gambling involve not just harm to the gamblers, but their families and communities.
