Exercise alone may not be a satisfactory way of losing weight. A closer look at the role of exercise in weight loss comes from the University of Virgina and Journal of the Endocrine Society. Researchers found it takes intense exercise to suppress appetite or perception of hunger in healthy humans. High intensity workouts suppressed levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin more than moderate exercise. Women may experience the benefit more than men, perhaps because they tend to have higher normal levels of ghrelin. Authors say exercise should be thought of as a drug where the “dose” should be customized to a person’s goals and health abilities, but that high-intensity exercise may be important as a weight loss program.
