Elderly people are most vulnerable to extreme heat. That message may only be partially true, since new research found young people are more at risk of dying from extreme heat. Results of the study at Columbia University’s Climate School, published in the journal Science Advances, were a surprise, young adults are generally considered the group most resistant to heat. Using statistics from Mexico, researchers compared the number of deaths above what would be expected from the combination of extreme heat and high humidity. It showed young adults are more likely to work outside in high heat conditions, and also more likely to engage in outdoor sports in extreme heat. The study showed, less surprisingly, infants had greater risk from heat.
