From our “Over the Horizon” file, research is nearly ready for human testing on a method to deliver insulin to diabetics without needles. The project is detailed in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, showing how oral insulin is coated to protect it from breaking down until it reaches the liver. There it is released only when blood sugar levels are high, reducing the risk of dangerous low blood sugar. In addition to fewer side effects, the new method under development means insulin-dependent diabetics will no longer have to jab themselves with a needle. Also, this form of insulin does not need to be refrigerated. While not yet available, it provides promise for a better future for the estimated seventy-five million insulin dependent diabetics worldwide.
