Artificial intelligence has both positive and negative possibilities. I’m happy to report on one of the latest positive uses of AI. Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory used data from four hundred thousand participants in the UK Biobank and tested against data from two separate health systems. The result, published in the journal Nature, is a proof-of-concept that it is possible for AI to generate meaningful predictions of more than one thousand diseases decades in advance. Authors say by modeling how different diseases develop over time, medical professionals may be better able to predict when certain diseases begin to emerge and how best to plan early intervention as well as a preventive approach to healthcare.
