Let’s play a game. The game, developed by researchers at the University of New South Wales, involves choices that either lead to reward or punishment. Results showed three different personality types. One type worked out which choice would lead to a bad outcome. Another type didn’t work it out ahead of time, but was able to change when shown the error of their ways. The third type continued to make the wrong choice, even after being told the likely outcome. Authors say this small group of players failed to recognize that their own behaviors caused the problem. The real world is more complex, but while information campaigns such as smoking, alcohol or gambling work for most people, compulsive individuals may need a different kind of intervention.
