Be a good listener! Most of us have heard that advice from a variety of sources. Does the ability and practice of listening have benefits? Yes, based on observations in an MBA business course at the University of Surrey. They found teaching listening skills cultivated more ethical business leaders, with the significant benefit that being a better listener also boosts their humility. Authors of the article in the Journal of Business Ethics noted that many assume humility is an innate trait—you have it or you don’t. This study shows humility can be taught and listening is the key. It found those in the listening course boosted multiple measures of humility, compared to students in traditional lecture courses. Maybe the advice to “listen up” can benefit all of us.
