LONG-TERM FASTING

An abstract presented to the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions is getting a lot of attention. It suggests a type of fasting called time-restricted eating may be harmful if followed for a long time. Limiting eating to eight hours or less each day was linked to an astounding ninety-one percent higher risk of cardiovascular death. This type of fasting has gained popularity in recent years as a way to lose weight and improve short-term heart health. But the long-term effects observed in data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey surprised researchers. The data came from following twenty-thousand Americans for as long as twenty years. Authors point out the survey statistics show an association, but do not prove eight-hour fasting caused cardiovascular death. A closer look at the full study is taking place.
