Textbooks are the traditional way to teach students, but academic experts from three universities in the UK encourage swapping textbooks for classroom games to improve engagement and learning. This project, reported by the University of Warwick, redefines the word “game” to mean an exercise that is more than entertainment, but learning, problem solving and raising awareness. Their research is contained in the Serious Games Cookbook which aims to support those new to the idea of serious games and how to design them. As one who would have preferred games to textbooks when I was in school, the goal of serious educational games seems an attractive way to be engaged in the classroom and, yes, learn.
