Existing research suggests more than one-half of adults over sixty-five have a difficult time dealing with various parts of the healthcare system, but a new study at Northwestern University discovered one in three middle-age adults have issues with health literacy, too. Authors of the article in the Journal of General Internal Medicine were surprised the problem is that pervasive. Details from doctors visits, consistently reading prescription instructions correctly and understanding medical forms were found to be lacking—information critical for managing chronic conditions of middle age. The study notes that billions are spent developing drugs, but far less is invested in helping patients use them correctly.
