Which is better for our heart health—aerobic exercise or strength training? Maybe both? Iowa State University researchers conducted the longest and largest supervised exercise study. It found that splitting the recommended amount of physical exercise between aerobic and strength training reduced cardiovascular disease risk as much as aerobic only, while improving muscle health. Researchers suggest that if you’re bored with aerobic exercise or want to reduce joint pain from running, the combination makes sense. The study, appearing in the European Heart Journal, may help give guidance to the estimated two billion people worldwide who are overweight and at increased risk cardiovascular diseases.
