Increasing attention has been given in recent years to concussions among high school athletes. Concussions are especially concerning at that age because their brain is still developing. Symptoms of concussion include cognitive issues such as balance, memory or concentration. Add another concern. Researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine focused on a type of brain activity often overlooked in concussions, called aperiodic activity, which slows brain activity. Authors reported to the Radiological Society of North America that high school athletes with concussions with slowed aperiodic activity are associated with worse cognitive symptoms and test scores. They stress the need to completely recover from concussions before returning to play.
