A nationwide survey shows most Americans have heard of statins, the most common medications to lower cholesterol, but many do not know there are non-statin medications. The Ohio State University study notes that some people with high cholesterol—and specifically, an inherited bad type of cholesterol—may not tolerate statins. The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center study mentions two oral non-statins, along with two injectable non-statins. If your healthcare professional recommends medications to lower high cholesterol, a type of statin will likely be the first choice, but if for some reason your system doesn’t tolerate or respond to statins, he or she may suggest one of these newer alternatives.
