More than one hundred thousand people in this country died of drug overdose in just one year. As devastating as that statistic is, there is another number that is even greater. Rand Corporation researchers estimate one hundred twenty-five million American adults know someone who died of an overdose. Put another way, the lives of more than forty percent of us are disrupted by a drug death. The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, comments that the experiences and needs of millions of survivors of an overdose loss have largely been overlooked in this crisis. Rand researchers argue for more help to address the needs of those left behind—that lives lost are only one aspect of the drug overdose crisis.
