REVERSING ATHEROSCLEROSIS

By May 28, 2026No Comments

The buildup of fatty plaque in our arteries, the hallmark of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, is a leading cause of heart attacks and ischemic strokes. A new review provides evidence that modern medicine is increasingly able to move beyond slowing progression of atherosclerosis and toward reducing the amount of plaque and making it less likely to break away from artery walls. The review, in the journal Current Drug Therapy, details the process of moving beyond statins to lower the bad kind of cholesterol to a newer generation of medications that often exceed what statins can do. The author makes a case for better use of imaging to measure the amount of plaque in our arteries, as well as measuring efforts to reduce it.
