RISKY BETS

By May 5, 2024No Comments

Sports gambling by its definition is risky, but that’s not where the risks end. A study at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and University of New Mexico finds binge drinking is disproportionately more common among sports betters than non-gamblers or those who don’t bet on sports. The survey of more than four thousand adults found sports gamblers were about twice as likely to consume excess alcohol while gambling, men and women. The study bolsters previous research linking sports betting with use of substances in addition to binge drinking, defined as five or more drinks at a single time—all in all not helpful in making the best sports betting decisions. The study is published in JAMA.
