Going the posted speed limit on highways, especially Interstates, seems to be rare. However, with the jump in fuel prices, new research from the University of Minnesota puts a price tag on speeding. The study analyzed over one hundred twenty million real world trips across this country. Researchers calculated that if drivers complied with posted speed limits society would save an average of twenty two million dollars a day and more than fifty tons of carbon dioxide from light duty vehicles. The study, in the peer-reviewed journal Communication Sustainability, concludes all this speed and extra fuel consumption results in saving only one minute to the average daily commute.
