STANDING TOO LONG

For years, we’ve been told sitting too much may be harmful to our health. Now, we’re told standing too much can also be harmful. A study in Finland found blood pressures over twenty-four hours among people who stood for extended time at their jobs tended to be higher than normal—suggesting potential harm to the heart and circulatory system. While standing for long periods at work may be harmful, aerobic exercise during leisure time remains a good way to lower blood pressure. Prolonged standing at work forces the heart to boost circulation to lower limbs. It suggests taking a break from standing during the workday, either by walking every half hour or sitting for some parts of the day. Just not all day. The study appears in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Medicine.
