Stress affects our body in various ways, including high blood pressure, headaches and trouble sleeping. Engaging in physical activity appears to protect the body from harmful stress. Conversely, lack of long-term physical activity is linked to a higher stress burden. That cumulative stress is the focus of research published in the scientific journal Psychoneuroendocrinology. The study in Finland found physical inactivity as a lifestyle in young adults resulted in higher stress levels in middle age. The researchers suggest physical activity at any life stage is beneficial in reducing the effects of stress, but the cumulative effects of stress on the body may be reduced by physical activity years earlier.
