Television exposure to young children has been discouraged for many years. The latest study focuses on the effects of TV on babies and toddlers. Drexel University scientists reported to JAMA Pediatrics that TV or DVD viewing makes children less sensitive to the real world around them, diminishing their responses to situations, such as their name being called. Greater TV viewing increased sensation seeking behavior. At ages twelve, eighteen and twenty-four months, authors found that each additional hour of daily screen time was associated with increased odds of higher sensation seeking behavior. They suggest minimizing or avoiding screen time for children younger than two.
