For the record, I am not a vegan nor do I have plans to adopt the vegan lifestyle. However, new research suggests a low-fat vegan diet that avoids animal products offers more than possible health benefits. It could save money. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine calculates a nineteen percent saving in food costs compared to the standard American diet. Over the course of a year, that could amount to six hundred fifty dollars. True, that some elements of a vegan diet, such as fresh vegetables, fruits and grains cost slightly more, the biggest savings came from avoiding meat and dairy. The study, appearing in JAMA Network Open, also discovered the popular Mediterranean diet actually costs slightly more than either the vegan or standard American diet.
