WHEN READING THE LABEL ISN’T ENOUGH

By August 17, 2026No Comments

We are often told to “read the label” on products such as cosmetics, lotions and cleaning products. However, new research found nearly every one of more than one hundred products they tested contained at least one chemical not on the label. More serious is eighty-five percent of the personal care and cleaning products contained at least one chemical with known or suspected health hazards, and one in four products contained chemicals that contradicted claims on the label. Authors of the study in the journal Environment and Health say reading the label can’t protect us when it doesn’t show what’s really in the bottle. They argue that a new generation of federal government oversight should include routine re-testing of products for undisclosed chemicals.
